The View Melts Down: Wild Debate Erupts Over Larry David Attacking Elmo: ‘It’s Not a Person, Alyssa!’
The View Hosts Clash in Heated Argument Over Larry David’s Elmo Attack
The View erupted in a heated debate on Friday after Larry David attacked Elmo during an appearance on the Today show. The incident sparked a wild argument among the hosts, with Joy Behar and Alyssa Farah Griffin taking opposite sides.
Behar and Griffin Spar Over Elmo’s Personhood
The debate began when Behar defended David’s actions, arguing that Elmo is “just a puppet.” Griffin, however, disagreed, saying that Elmo is “a very real and important figure to many children.”
“It’s not a person, Alyssa,” Behar said. “It’s a puppet! There’s a puppeteer with his hand up Elmo‘s behind.”
Griffin responded by saying that she “grew up in a house where you’d eat your cereal and you’d watch GMA or the Today show before you went to school,” and that she didn’t feel it was appropriate for David to put his hands on Elmo while children potentially watched.
Haines and Navarro Join the Fray
The argument quickly escalated, with Sara Haines and Ana Navarro also weighing in. Haines accused Behar of being “dismissive” of children’s feelings, while Navarro called David’s actions “so ugly.”
“He’s a comedian, it’s on brand,” legal expert Sunny Hostin added, though she said she was “surprised Elmo‘s dad didn’t punch [David] in the throat.”
Griffin Defends Elmo’s Teachable Moment
Griffin tried to defend Elmo by saying that he “used it as a teachable moment to say, ‘Ask permission before touching,'” but Behar was not impressed.
“Alyssa, what planet are you on that you think that a 6-year-old is watching the Today Show?” Behar asked.
Haines and Behar Clash Over Elmo’s Significance
Haines then jumped in to defend Griffin, arguing that Elmo is a ubiquitous figure in many homes and that children are likely to see him even if they are not actively watching the Today Show.
“They are wallpaper in homes everywhere. Even if you’re not sitting, watching, when your mom says, ‘Elmo’s on,’ [the kids] come out right when Larry David strangles him?” Haines said.
Behar and Navarro Clash Over the Definition of a Muppet
The argument reached its peak when Behar and Navarro clashed over the definition of a Muppet. Behar insisted that Elmo is a puppet, while Navarro argued that he is a Muppet.
“It’s a puppet!” Behar said. “It’s a Muppet! It’s a Muppet!”
Navarro responded by covering her ears and saying, “Oh my God, don’t scream like that. I’m going to punch you.”
Behar Ends the Segment Abruptly
Behar eventually gave up and threw the show to commercial with a curt farewell.
“In fitting fashion, while they navigated their war over the legendary puppet/Muppet icon, the ladies of The View were all clad in Elmo-leaning red in support of raising awareness about cardiovascular disease.”
