Fighter Movie: Siddharth Anand’s Bizarre Claim About Indian Audience
Fighter Underperformed Because 90% of Indians Haven’t Flown in Planes, Claims Siddharth Anand
Siddharth Anand, the director of the recently released Fighter film, has made a bizarre claim about the film’s underperformance at the box office. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Anand said that Fighter is a completely new territory for the Indian audience as 90% of them have not flown in planes.
This claim has been met with widespread criticism, with many people pointing out that it is not a valid reason for the film’s failure. Some have even accused Anand of being out of touch with the Indian audience.
Siddharth Anand’s Comments Draw Criticism
Anand’s comments have been widely criticized on social media, with many people calling them insensitive and ignorant.
- One person tweeted, “Pathaan was a hit because 90% Indians are RAW agents.”
- Another tweeted, “12th Fail was a hit because 90% Indians are twelfth fail??”
- A third person joked, “And Dangal was a blockbuster because 130% Indians are into wrestling.”
Siddharth Anand’s Defense
In the same interview, Anand defended his comments, saying that he was simply trying to explain why Fighter did not do as well as expected at the box office.
He said, “This is my dissection. They felt like this is a little alien. How many percentage of Indians… I mean this is a variation, for an academic discussion, how many of them have a passport? How many travelled in a plane? You are talking about plane’s action. They have not understood what is the exhilaration that they are supposed to feel the action? There’s a certain initial disconnect like ‘Mujhe nahi pata ye kya hai (I do not know what is happening)! But once you enter the auditorium, you realize this is such a basic film. It is an emotional kahaani, a very desi story. It appeals to the lowest common denominator as a story. The genre of it is very new and I think that was the initial hesitance.”
Fighter Movie: A Box Office Disappointment
Fighter, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, was released in theaters on January 25, 2023. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its action sequences and others criticizing its lack of emotional depth.
The film’s Box Office performance has also been disappointing, with the film grossing only Rs 134 crore after its first week in theaters. This is a far cry from the Rs 250 crore budget that the film was made on.
It remains to be seen whether Fighter will be able to turn things around at the box office in the coming weeks. However, Siddharth Anand‘s bizarre claim about the Indian audience is unlikely to help the film’s chances.
