Madame Web (2024): Dakota Johnson’s Experience and SJ Clarkson’s Vision
Dakota Johnson’s Concerns About Madame Web
Dakota Johnson, who portrays Cassandra Webb in the upcoming Sony’s Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web, recently shared her concerns about the movie in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Johnson, who is known for her roles in films like Fifty Shades of Grey and The Social Network, admitted that the filmmaking process for Madame Web was completely new to her, as it was her first time working extensively with blue screens. She expressed feelings of uncertainty about the final result and her own performance, saying, “I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an OK job!’ But I trusted [SJ Clarkson]. She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”
SJ Clarkson’s Unique Vision for Madame Web
Director SJ Clarkson, who previously helmed episodes of the Defenders Saga shows Jessica Jones and The Defenders, also shared her thoughts on Madame Web in the same interview.
Clarkson revealed that she was drawn to the film’s female-led story and the psychological exploration of its title character. She explained, “I loved the psychological, cerebral nature. Not to sound too wanky about it, but it’s about what’s going on in [Cassandra Webb’s] head and her grappling with that. Is she going insane? Is this real? She’s battling with that within herself and trying to understand it.”
Standalone Story and Potential Connections to Venom and Morbius
Clarkson confirmed that Madame Web is a standalone story and takes place in the early 1990s.
While the film is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it is not expected to feature any characters from the studio’s previous Spider-Man-related films like Venom and Morbius. However, the possibility of such appearances, especially in a post-credit scene, remains open.
