Justin Timberlake Makes Comeback on SNL as Britney Spears Fans Continue Support for “Selfish“
Timberlake Returns to SNL Stage After Decade
Justin Timberlake made his triumphant return to the Saturday Night Live stage after a 10-year absence, performing his new single “Selfish” and “Sanctified” from his upcoming album, “Everything I Thought It Was.”
The Grammy winner was joined by longtime friend and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, who introduced him to the stage.
Spears‘ Fans Keep Her 2011 Song “Selfish” Trending
While Timberlake received critical acclaim for his performance, his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears‘ 2011 song of the same name continues to dominate the charts.
Spears‘ fans propelled the lesser-known track from the deluxe edition of her album “Femme Fatale” to the number one spot on iTunes following Timberlake‘s release.
Despite both songs experiencing a decline in rankings, Spears, now 42, maintains a slight lead over her former beau.
Long-Standing Grudge Between Timberlake and Spears
The rivalry between Timberlake and Spears dates back to 2002 when he accused her of infidelity in his single “Cry Me a River,” featuring a Spears look-alike in the Music video.
Tensions escalated last year with the release of Spears‘ memoir, “The Woman in Me,” where she detailed their three-year relationship and claimed to have had an abortion due to Timberlake‘s unwillingness to become a father.
She also accused the “SexyBack” singer of adopting a “blaccent” when he first met R&B artist Ginuwine.
Social Media Reacts to Timberlake‘s Performance
Many social media users criticized Timberlake for his choice of setting and backup performers, accusing him of cultural appropriation.
One Twitter user wrote, “#JustinTimberlake showing up on #SNL with a whole Black Church congregation…the only thing missing was his cornrows and Ginuwine.”
Another user griped, “So this has-been thinks he gonna put out a song called Sanctified using mostly Black people in the band/background singers and rapper, create the setting as a small town Black church to prop his No singing azz up. Go back into retirement.”
Timberlake‘s New Album and Upcoming Tour
Timberlake‘s latest album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” marks his first release since 2018’s “Man of the Woods.”
Page Six exclusively reported that the Grammy winner has an ambitious era planned, including a concert tour.
After his split from Spears in 2001, Timberlake married actress Jessica Biel in 2012. The couple shares two sons: Silas, 8, and Phineas, 3.
Spears has two sons, Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Last year, her third husband, Sam Asghari, filed for divorce after just over a year of marriage.
