Billy Joel Set to Release First New Solo Song in 15 Years, “Turn the Lights Back On”
Billy Joel is making a comeback with his first new solo single since 2007. The song, titled “Turn the Lights Back On,” will be released on February 1st and is described as “ushering in the next chapter of his story.”
World News: Joel’s Return to Music After Long Hiatus
Joel has been retired from songwriting since 1993’s US chart-topper “River of Dreams.” He explained his decision to retire by saying that he couldn’t be as good as he wanted to be and that he didn’t want to beat himself up for not being better. Since then, he has only released one new solo single, 2007’s “All My Life.”
Joel has continued to tour, though, and has weathered occasional moments of doubt about his voice and his ability to hit the notes in his older songs. However, a four-star Guardian review of his 2023 concert in London’s Hyde Park described him as “a precision-tooled entertainment machine” and “an expert pasticheur, re-inhabiting the sounds of his youth: Motown, doo-wop, Tin Pan Alley.”
Joel’s Upcoming Tour Dates and Residency
Joel is set to conclude his long-running residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden in July, ending with his 150th show in the monthly series. His other tour dates this year include co-headlining sets with Stevie Nicks and, separately, Sting.
Fans of Billy Joel are eagerly awaiting the release of “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new solo song in 15 years. The song is sure to be a hit, and it’s a sign that Joel is still going strong after all these years.
