Barbie and Lego Movies: Awards, Snubs, and Controversies
Ryan Gosling Addresses Barbie Oscar Snubs
Ryan Gosling has spoken out again about the Oscars snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig in the respective Best Actress and Best Director categories for the “Barbie” movie.
In an interview with Variety, Gosling said that he “heavily edited” his original statement, which expressed disappointment that Robbie and Gerwig were not nominated.
“I think if I say any more about it, I’m going to basically put on a mink and start challenging people to a beach-off on Malibu Beach,” he joked, referencing how Ken channels his aggression in the film.
Despite the snubs, “Barbie” received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. This makes Gerwig only the third female director to be up for the award.
Margot Robbie Responds to Barbie Snubs
Margot Robbie also addressed the snubs last month during a SAG-AFTRA discussion.
“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director,” she said. “What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”
Barbie Critics and Film Nerds Won’t Prevent Oscar Best Picture Bump
Despite the snubs, many believe that “Barbie” will still get a big Oscar bump.
Peter Bart, a film critic and editor, writes in Deadline that “the anticipated ‘Oscar bump’ at the box office will surely ‘lighten up’ their distributors as well as product-hungry exhibitors.”
