Austin Butler Defends Calling Ex Vanessa Hudgens a “Friend” After Dating for Almost 10 Years
Austin Butler has opened up about why he referred to his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens as a “friend” during a recent interview, after fans criticized him for seemingly downplaying their relationship.
Butler and Hudgens dated from 2011 to 2020, and were together when Butler landed the role of Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic Elvis.
In a new interview with Esquire, Butler explained that he didn’t want to bring up too much about Hudgens in the interview because he values his privacy and didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable.
“I felt that I was respecting her privacy in a way and not wanting to bring up a ton of things that would cause her to have to talk,” Butler said.
“I have so much love and care for her. It was in no way trying to erase anything.”
Butler also said that he felt he owed Hudgens a lot for believing in him and encouraging him to pursue the role of Elvis.
“I was with my partner at the time,” Butler said. “We’d been together for so long and she had this sort of clairvoyant moment and so I really, I owe her a lot for believing in me.”
Butler’s comments come after he faced backlash for referring to Hudgens as a “friend” during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in January 2023.
When asked if he had always wanted to play Elvis, Butler said that a “friend” had convinced him to pursue the role.
“The month before I heard that [director] Baz [Luhrmann] was making the [‘Elvis’] movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend,” Butler said.
“And there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio, and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, ‘You’ve gotta play Elvis!’”
Fans quickly realized that Butler was talking about Hudgens, who had previously told the same story during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2019.
Despite the backlash, Butler and Hudgens have both moved on with their lives.
Butler is now dating model Kaia Gerber, while Hudgens is married to baseball player Cole Tucker.
Austin Butler Shares More About His Journey to Play Elvis
In addition to talking about his relationship with Hudgens, Butler also opened up to Esquire about the challenges of playing Elvis and how he worked to create the character’s iconic voice.
Butler said that he spent three years preparing for the role, and that he worked with a dialect coach to perfect Elvis’s Southern accent.
He also said that he watched hours of footage of Elvis performing and studied his mannerisms.
Butler’s hard work paid off, and he received critical acclaim for his performance in Elvis.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Film.
